Scientist I Interviewed on Evolution, the Bible, & Climate Change
by Seeker4 inive got some interesting quotes about global climate change, evolution and the bible from a well-known scientist i interviewed last week.
thought some here would enjoy these, as these are issues we often debate on jwd.
im doing an article for a magazine about scientist tom wessels and his new book, the myth of progress.

S4,
Very interesting. Can't wait to read the full article. Does he have any potential solutions? Seems to me that until governments get enough pressure to get serious about CO2 emissons, things are going to get worse. I've got to believe there are other ways to generate the energy we need without oil. There just doesn't seem to be enough money going into alternative fuels.

MySpace is dying...
by Shaolu inlately i've noticed more and more jw groups on myspace seem to be disappearing and losing members.
at first i egotistically thought might have something to do with my efforts (i sometimes suffer from delusions of grandeur).
however, a couple posts came to my attention on two of the private jw groups.... .

km 2/07: Memorial Tract campaign
by GermanXJW ini am not sure if this has been already brought up but i got a glimpse at the feb 07 kingdom ministry.
the watchtower leaders seem to be convinced that the mechanics of tract campaigns to push numbers are a success.
another one will be started in mid-march to announce the jw memorial.

This has got me thinking. I could envision a time in the not too distant future when 1) the
AsleepAwake (I love this strikethru thing!) is discotinued (already gone from twice to once a month, then make it a quarterly rag and finally axe it), 2) the WT is turned into a monthly KM type used for the WT study (not distributed publicly). Then, 3) alternate between a book offer, a brochure offer and a tract campaign. Not sure how the economics would work out, but I would bet they could save a ton of money.

Did anyone ever rebel to play school sports
by Billzfan23 inhow many of you who grew up in the truth truly loved a sport and fought hard against your jw parents to get to play it?
post your experience here.
my determination to play come hell or high water led to my mother turning me over to the state as a youngster, which then lead to foster care and freedom until i foolishly came back to the borg as an adult.

Billzfan,
My determination to play come hell or high water led to my mother turning me over to the state as a youngster, which then lead to foster care
Wow, that's the craziest thing I've ever seen! No offense, but your mother seems "a bit" unstable. Wow, just wow.
I always wanted to play but never could have gotten away with crossing my dad on that one. It just wasn't worth it.
Now, when I started working in an office, I played on the company softball team. It was great fun but I felt quite guilty about it. Even missed meetings to play! But, when I decided to get serious about "the truth" I stopped.
I like many others turned down college but again I'm making up for it by going to school now. Shhh don't tell anyone. The funny thing is that when I casually mentioned that I was going back to school to my folks, they were very proud? Uh, didn't you guys tell me when I was a teenager that college was from the devil???
But, like you billzfan, I'm going to give my kids an opportunity to play, if thats what they want to do.

Another Deposition with Watchtower Attorneys
by Amazing inwell folks, ever since the end of 1999, when the issue of child abuse among jws was raised, things seemed to have moved slowly ... at least too slowly for those who need and want to see justice done for the vctims.
in 2000, bill bowen, who was teaming up with those of us already working on the topic, finally emerged in public to start silentlambs, and brought in nbc dateline, etc.
for much welcome attention.

Jim,
Thanks for the update. I'm going to go back and read the previous posts. But, I wanted to pass along my best wishes and appreciate your willingness to try to obtain some justice for the victims. The firm of Love & Norris should also be congratulated.
Is there a trial date set? Do you think the WTS will attempt to settle or do you get the notion they will go down swinging? My money is on settlement. But, this is the case having to do with the database, correct? If that's the case, they will fight all the way.

Annual visits to DF'd ones
by JK666 ini have been disfellowshipped since 2001. does the society still recommend that elders make annual visits to encourage people to come back?
just wondering, as i never have received one.
i do not want to go back, just wondering if this is just another lie about their fake compassion and love.

In some of the congregations I've been associated with, an effort was made to contact most of the df'ed. I always approached folks trying to be as nonconfrontational and friendly as possible. I never df'ed anyone and most of the folks were gone so long that I didn't know them. I was thrown off of someones property once, but that's the worse. Usually, it was a short chat and I would ask if there was any interest in coming back. It was always, no thanks.
In one congregation, if we knew someone who was df'ed and moved out of our territory, we would call the congo that had the territory and ask them to call on them. I'm sure they did it - NOT.
I never understood why the elders weren't more interested in finding these lost sheep and bringing them back. Seems like that would be one of their primary jobs.

I haven't seen the KM yet, but this is really pretty lame. Normally, the congregations get consigned a number of memorial invitations that they're supposed to give to family, friends and those they meet in the field. Usually, you offered the invitation to all your RVs and anyone you "placed" mags with.
This isn't a very smart move. The number of mags "placed" surely went down during the last campaign. The same will happen with this one. I'm baffled as to what they think they'll accomplish. After all, the guilt trip is laid on thick during the Memorial season as it is.
And, as was mentioned, if you conduct a special campaign every couple of months, it is no longer special. I wonder how long before they proclaim the preaching work is over?

Comments You Will Not Hear at the 12-17-06 WT Study (Sacred Gatherings)
by blondie in: the special assembly day, the two-day circuit assembly, and the three- or four-day district convention.
q9) how can we show our respect for sacred gatherings by our dress and behavior?.
- how can children show that they respect the sacred nature of our meetings?.

Strange about the letter. Maybe that was only in the UK because nothing was read at our meeting today.
Its funny but the auidence wasn't very enthusiatic about this subject and the conductor had to pull comments more than usual. Of course, we were encouraged to "make trips outside unpleasant for our kids" when they act up. The conductor also hammered the gum and I don't think most folks thought it was disrespectful given their comments. He literally had to get 4 folks before they hit on the disrespectful comment that he was looking for.
Even my wife thought whoever wrote the article a) has never had kids and b) was airing his pet peeves. Also, the comment about "annointed Chrisitans and their companions" caught her attention. She tought that it was very strange and I explained that only the annointed are considered Chrisitians. The rest of us are just companions. She didn't believe me until I showed her in several places last week (I guess she wasn't paying attention last week). I believe I planted a seed today.
